Profile

A theoretical physicist, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences. He is the founding dean of the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics, vice president of the Chinese Physical Society, and deputy chair of the Supervision Committee of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has received the Second Prize of the State Natural Science Award and the title of National Model Worker. He has long organized and participated in strategic planning for the development of physics in China. His representative books include Modern Course in Quantum Mechanics and Classical Yang-Mills Field Theory.

He is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education's Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and a national-level candidate of the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project. He serves as director of the State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices. He entered Jilin University in 1981 and earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees there. After completing his doctorate in 1991, he conducted postdoctoral research in polymer science in Jilin University's Department of Chemistry. From 1993, he worked at the Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials of the Ministry of Education at Jilin University; from 1996 to 1997, he was a research assistant in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong; and from 1999 to 2000, he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. He received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2002, became a professor at South China University of Technology in 2012, was selected as a national-level candidate of the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project in 2013, and led an Innovative Research Group project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2016. He was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021.

Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Boya Chair Professor and Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor at Peking University; Director of the Peking University Stem Cell Research Center; Chair of the Department of Cell Biology, Peking University School of Basic Medical Sciences; Senior Investigator at the Peking-Tsinghua Center for Life Sciences; and Leading Scientist at Changping Laboratory. Professor Deng received his B.Sc. degree from Wuhan University in 1984, his M.Sc. degree in Immunology from Shanghai Second Medical University in 1987, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1995. He joined the faculty of the School of Life Sciences at Peking University in 2001. Professor Deng has long been dedicated to developing novel approaches for regulating cell fate and establishing fundamentally new technologies for the generation of pluripotent stem cells. In particular, he has made a series of pioneering contributions to small-molecule-mediated cell-fate conversion. He was the first to achieve the reversal of the developmental clock using small molecules alone, enabling somatic cells to regain pluripotency. These advances not only established an entirely new system for somatic cell reprogramming but also accelerated the translational application of cell therapies for major diseases. He has published more than 190 papers, which have received over 20,000 citations. Professor Deng was named one of Nature's 10 in 2019. His honors and awards include the Future Science Prize in Life Sciences, the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Achievement Award, the Wu Jieping–Paul Janssen Medical & Pharmaceutical Award, the Zhongyuan Concord Life Medicine Achievement Award, the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Chinese Society for Cell Biology, and the Zhongguancun Award for Outstanding Contribution.

An academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a mathematician, he is Chair Professor at Peking University, Deputy Director of the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research, and Director of the China–Russia Mathematics Center. His research focuses on algebra, finite groups, and modular representation theory. He solved the well-known 39th and 40th problems in Brauer's list and has achieved a series of internationally influential results in defect-zero blocks, fusion systems, and the categorification of modular representation theory. He has served as Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University, President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, a member of the International Mathematical Union's Commission for Developing Countries, and Editor-in-Chief of 《Algebra Colloquium》. His honors include the Third Prize of the State Natural Science Award and the Chern Prize.

Siming You is a scholar in systems engineering and environmental engineering and a Professor of Systems Engineering at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, UK. His research focuses on systems integration and modelling, waste management and resource recovery, sustainable energy, circular economy, and environmental impact assessment. He is also dedicated to applying machine learning methods to the analysis of environmental and sustainable systems. He graduated from Beihang University and obtained his PhD in Thermofluids Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He previously held research positions at Nanyang Technological University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Environmental Research Institute at the National University of Singapore. He chairs the International Association for Biohydrogen. He also serves as the Editor of Biochar, Associate Editor of the Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering, and an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Hazardous Materials and Bioresource Technology.
